The Spanish Heritage Track teachers (Urbina, Naranjo-absent, Fernandez, Rodriguez)met to discuss issues in this track.
Should Sp. Heritage 1 be easier?
Some ideas were to stress grammar and writing in stead of poetry and readings, if necessary.
Problem: students in Heritage track are now 2nd generation or more, so there is a difference in the way they can be taught as opposed to a native.
Should we adjust the program to the reality? We believe we already do.
We are flexible depending on the day or the particular class.
Suggestions: writing compositions only in class so as to avoid parental or other help; we need to stress vocabulary and comprehension on the stories; have more oral and listening practice.
Good rapport and exchange of ideas came out of this meeting.
Ms Rodriguez has her US students take an article from the paper, write a summary do an oral presentation on it and define 3 new words. She does this Mondays for 8 weeks.
Her Sp.Heritage3Honors students have listening and oral practices regularly and Mr. Urbina does also in preparation for the AP Spanish Language Exam.
Sources for the above are www.rtve.es They have news videos and blogs. There is also "tv espana a la carta".
The students can listen and watch this in class or at home. In class you can give them questions immediately after watching and listening to test comprehension or it can be HW and/or you can have a quiz the next day.
Suggestions for things the Spanish Heritage 8 students need to work more on as per Mr. Urbina and Ms. Rodriguez:
preterit
"a" personal
ser/estar
identifying the subject of a sentence so as to have subject-verb agreement
Suggestions for tests/quizzes:
Instead of a fill in the blank sentence where the whole section is in one tense, give the sentence in the present and have the students change it to the preterit.
Mix in litle by little different verb tenses so that it will be easier for the students to do different verb sequences at the US.
The meeting was very positive and the sharing of teaching styles and techniques as well as resources was very welcomed.
